K-Pop albums/posters reviews

Note: I review with no biased feelings or any hate – I try my best to stay neutral and only comment on the facts.

My sister finally got her K-Pop albums yesterday from her friend. As of now, she has Sistar’s Give It To Me, EXO’s XOXO, 2NE1 EP, signed copy of Girls’ Generation’s Run Devil Run and 4Minute’s signed Volume Up. I’ve seen through all of the albums and here’s what I think of each one:

  1. Give It To Me: The photobook was slotted inside a plastic skin, which made it pretty hard to put back in. The whole thing was the size of a small sketchbook and legitimately looked like a real photobook. The pictures were of the members in burlesque-like setting and clothes. The main setting of the photoshoot seemed to be the backstage, like the dressing room and the behind the stage area, but there are some scenes of the girls on the stage or behind the curtains. Most of the photos are of the girls in same clothes and place but with “different” poses, which I’ll admit was a bit usual. I mean, it’s true that the concept was interesting, but the poses in the photobook was not as much. I’m not sure though, because I’m a girl – maybe the boys would like their poses more. The CD was at the very back; it was black with intricate patterns circling the hole in the middle. The overall presentation of the album was good, I think. 4/5.
  2. XOXO: The album was pretty small, compared to the other ones, and it’s purely made of paper. Genius. Anyways, the book was stylised to look like some kind of year book about the EXO class, complete with class photos, pictures of acticities and other bits and pieces depicting the school life of the EXO boys. What I don’t understand is the scribbles in the book – they look like a 3-year-old had randomly scribbled in the whole book or something, judging by the quality of the colourful scribbles. Along with the childish scribbles were random drawings, mostly of wolves (and there’s also a weird-looking werewolf near the end of the photobook). Drawings aside, the pictures in the photobook looked adorable and domestic, as if EXO was really a class. A really lonely class in a really lonely school. Where are the other students and classes? The CD was located at the back of the book, much like Sistar – it was a white CD with scribbles and stuff on it. Again, pre-school work. But in general, the concept of the album and the quality was satisfying and creative. 4/5.
  3. 2NE1: The album was made of acrylic (or so it looked like it) with a plastic CD holder beneath the thin photobook. The thin photobook had pictures of the members in weird psychedelic rooms and had a geometrical concept to it, as proven in the fashion of the photobook and the patterns and fonts throughout the pages. The pictures were old school – like, old K-Pop style where they didn’t have much make up and there’s not much glamour in their poses and setting. The CD was white with geometrical circles on it – simple, really. There’s not much that I can say about this album because there’s not much in it, really. 2/5.
  4. Run Devil Run: The album case is the typical cheap CD casing you’ll get when buying the Sims 3 CDs or other video games or DVDs. There’s a picture of Yoona’s silhouette at the cover along with some glittering golden dust around her. The first glance of it told me that it held not much interesting parts. Sometimes, you can judge a book by its cover. The photobook was thicker than 2NE1’s by a bit, but the pictures in it were only individual pictures that would take two pages (for one picture, one member) and then a group picture at the back, and I’ve noticed that they were wearing the same clothes and had the same hairstyles for the whole photobook. Most of the things in it were full of lyrics and other messages that I don’t understand. The CD was black with Yoona’s high-heel clad shoe and glittering thingies around it – again, simple. I’m sorry, but there’s not much to look at here. 2/5.
  5. Volume Up: Well, here’s something interesting. The album is large and made of cardboard – about the size of a PS2, but thicker and lighter. The photos were a series of cards in a plastic skin similar to Sistar’s album, with pictures on either sides. And with different poses too! The group had three different concepts in the album: the elegant authority, the vampire and the innocent cuties. It’s a weird combination but at least they gave us a pretty reasonable amount of pictures! There are two group pictures, the elegant authority and the vampires, with lyrics at the back. The CD was small, with pink plastic lining at the side to make it seem like a normal-sized CD. There’s some cute patterns on it, like microphones, hearts and pinwheels. I think the only let-down in the album is the cardboard structure because it breaks easily. 3/5.

Which do you think is the best album out of the five? Which album(s) do you like the least?

CL is the Baddest Female!

The tile is saying the most obvious thing ever so I’m not sure why I wrote it. Everyone don’t have to really be reminded that CL is the Baddest Female in the K-Pop circle – but then, there’s Lee Hyori, but you know what I mean. If CL and a lion were to be put in a ring, the lion will roll over and lick her foot before CL even blinks. See? That’s just how awesome she is!

The K-Pop image of female idols is that of the cutesy-elegant-I-am-so-pretty image, and it’s just so overused that I don’t dig it anymore (but CutiePieMarzia pulls odd the cutesy image really well because she’s just so sweet!). And then 2NE1 comes around and then I was like “Ohmigosh! My eyes – they’re blinded by 2NE1’s badassery!” Seeing their I-am-your-leader-now-kiss-my-foot image was really a doze of fresh air for me. I get it if you don’t really like the image because some people like femininity more than liberty, but I guess I like it.

The problem with the image is that it has become somewhat of a stereotype for YG artists. It’s not like I’m saying that all of their artists are like that, but GD shares a similar wacko theme to CL’s music video. I guess the difference is that GD is a boy and CL is a girl – joking, joking. The difference is that while GD shows the quirks of being a better individual, CL – while similar – leans more towards girls and how awesome they are. But still, YG generally promotes the idea of being different from other people and the feel of self-confidence.

Now regarding the song: should I tell you my first impressions or the later effects? Well, I should tell you that the song didn’t really grab me in immediately. I don’t hail from this style of music so it was a while until I start liking it. The part before the chorus was the most upbeat part of the song and I like that, but the verses and the chorus itself was not that encouraging. Like the part right before the chorus, I was expecting some more blast before another burst, but the chorus then popped the balloon. At least the end part made up for it – I like that part. By the time I like the song, I guess it was alright.

To see CL’s MV of “The Baddest Female”, it’s below here:

What do you think of the song and concept?

Lee Hi – Rose

I just watched Lee Hi’s “Rose” MV and I was amazed! The song and the MV goes really well together and the concept is just beautiful, a great change to Lee Hi’s previous cutesy-badass image; it seemed like she had grown up! It looks like the MV director is probably the same one who did “That XX” by G-Dragon, but I must admit I dig this director’s style. There’s just more reasons for me to like YG MVs more and more because there’s just so much art and symbolism – and we all know I am an artist by heart but a scientist by brain.

Before, I had been listening to B.A.P’s “One Shot” and Lee Hi’s “It’s Over” but now I have another favourite K-Pop song of 2013 – yay!

And after watching the MV, I decided to check the translation of the lyrics. It was like reading a femme fatale’s inner heart, like how she knows she is beautiful but deadly, but she loves this guy so much she doesn’t want him to get hurt because of her, and so she’s telling him to get away from her instead of getting him to stay with her. It makes sense though, because if you watch the MV, you can see Lee Hi being surrounded by pretty white, pink or red roses and dancers in some scenes but in other scenes she was surrounded with sharp needles, banners that say things like “Run Away” and “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”, and also a scene where she’s trapped in red coral-needle-like thing. And then there were soldiers going through the needle battlefield with red paint explosions, symbolising how the men that likes her will have to go through if they were to stay with her – pain, difficulty and explosions – all the while Lee Hi just looked so indifferent and pretty (she’s so pretty!).

I don’t mind that there’s no dance for the music – in fact, I’m glad there isn’t any box-dance session (*cough**cough*SM*cough*). I don’t think there can be a dance that can suit the song, not that it’s a bad thing.

I still remember seeing Lee Hi for the first time in KPop Stars. I didn’t know she’ll be this huge but I’m really impressed. I can’t wait for her other songs!

World Depression Day!

Yesterday was my mum’s birthday – Happy Birthday, Mum! I love you (even though I don’t really say it)!

That aside, today’s Valentine’s Day, also known as World Depression and Desperation Day! Come one – I’m right. The people I know in my year have at least one rose from someone what how many did I get? None! Well, I kind of expected that…but it still hurts! Plus, a boy in my year (Jared) called me “low”. Okay, so it started with us talking about dates and stuff and Jared’s friend was like “You can’t take Nour because she doesn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day; you can’t take Tyra because she’s taken. Why don’t you try [rookieMANGAKA]?” Jared looked at me, laughed and said:

“My standards isn’t as low as her!”

Fortunately, my friends supported me and drove that jerk away. At first, I was determined to spend Valentine’s Day normally but after that incident I’ve become more depressed. It’s not that I like him, it’s just…anyone would be hurt if someone says that, right? Meh, at least I have a reason to insult him, then.

Also, to make up for no roses, my friends and I did a “Crisps Cocktail Party”. Basically we bought every flavour of crisps there were in the canteen and then mix them together so we can eat all the flavours. It made up for the previous events. (My friends are the best!)

Other news: the Botball Competition thing is going to start soon! We’re nearly finished with the robots and Dr. Dan (one of our supervisors) will participate in managing the team’s visas and plane tickets, make the practice game board and making the team’s own t-shirts. I’m not sure if I’ll go or not because the fee for the trip is kind of high in my point of view, so I might consider it. Besides, I can still go to the next competition next year and next year I’ll have more chance to get picked into the team, anyways – that will be an excuse for going, rather than going just for the sake of it. I’ve learned some more programming and it’s really interesting; I’ll keep my position as a programmer next year, too.

There will be a Spring Fair at my school on Saturday 16th February and I’ll be going because I heard there’s going to be arts and craft place, hair braiding, face painting, and throwing pies at our teachers. Yup, it’s nearly Pie Day.

Sports Day is next Thursday! We did relay practice yesterday and now my thighs feel like they’ve been shredded. Oh, and we’re not doing long jump or javelin this year because our headteacher said it’s too dangerous. Maybe something happened during one of the practices, but don’t you think high jump’s more dangerous than the two of them? No? You’re not my friend, anymore!

For Valentine’s Day story, I’m posting Deus Ex Machina chapter 8 and a story I wrote for my English class, which involves the theme “Family Relationships” [WARNING: Contains hate]. Maybe I’ll pitch in a love story but maybe I’ll be too depressed for not getting any cookies, chocolates or roses today. But I’ll try! It’ll be a one-shot – “Cleansing Cream”! Yay! You know, “Cleansing Cream” by Brown Eyed Girls? It’s a Korean girl group; the song is beautiful and the music video is very symbolic. I’ve give the link to the video as well as Simon and Martina’s review of the video at the bottom.

So, did you get anything at Valentine’s Day today?

SHINee Holmes

So, I’ve heard SHINee’s comeback song, “Sherlock” and I thought that it was… really epic?

Well, the song is so “Sherlock-ish” and I love Sherlock Holmes because of it’s classic detective plot line and creative mysteries. The music video concept is very attractive and handsome (if you know what I mean) and most important of all, the wonderful voices and the boys’ gorgeous looks!

For a moment, I thought Taemin was a girl and I was a bit frustrated at how he’s prettier than me despite being a boy (grr…!); Minho looks like a charming prince as always; Onew with curly hair looked so adorable! Jonghyun amazes me with his powerful vocals, just as he always does, and Key… he’s just “Almighty”, alright! Also, I love Jessica’s cameo and her being dubbed as “The Most Beautiful Girl In The World” – just epic!

The song is very good and the music video matches the song very well. There was one thing that I was curious about, though; why the hell did they take the jewelry at the end?

Back and happy!

Hey guys! I know I have been on hiatus for about, what? A week or so? But everything happened so quickly and I was so busy, with the Science Fair and the audition. Speaking of auditions, I got into the chorus! I’d like to congratulate my friends who got the main roles, especially Ali who got the part as Professor Marvel.

And so, I watched the debut song of B.A.P. (Best Absolute Perfect), this new K-Pop group and I thought it was awesome! I admit I fell in love with Zelo, the maknae, after I heard his rap part and his curly blond hairstyle really suit him – he looked so cute! Check out the video here:

Also, I’m writing this story I thought of and I’m still in the middle of chapter one, but I’m planning on finishing it for real! I’ve decided to become a psychiatrist after a long thought, too; my brother said he wanted to be a doctor so it’s my chance to pick a path I want, and I chose to be a psychiatrist because it might help me get some research material if I’m writing a book in the future. Besides, I’m interested in mental disorders and such.

Oh, and I also watched a bit of Wild Romance, a new K-Drama, at my friends house and I thought that the story was kind of good… except for the fact that this dude look old and disturbing to be one of the main characters. Overall, it was pretty good.

Okay, i hope you guys learn something from my post this time (or not) and I’ll try to post something next time. See you!

Wonder Girls – The DJ Is Mine

I have it! Wonder Girls’ new U.S. single, ‘The DJ Is Mine’, featuring School Gyrls. I like the song since it’s catchy and has a nice lyric. I read about the movie thingy too, and I was expecting it to be something cool… but it turns out it’s going to be for ‘Teen Nick’ as in ‘Nickelodeon’. But either ways, I still love Wonder Girls!

So, here is the link to download the song. Unfortunately, you’ll have to make an account to download it but you can still listen to it, so enjoy!

K-Pop Fandom

Recently, I read a page about K-Pop fandom. Apparently, every group have their own name for their fans like:

*Super Junior – E.L.F.
*Girls’ Generation/SNSD – S♥NE
*2NE1 – Blackjacks
*Big Bang – V.I.P.
*Wonder Girls – Wonderful
*SHINee – SHINee World

There were still more but this were the ones that interested me. Anyways, I’m the type to hate taking sides because of biased opinion so I don’t belong in any fandom. But really, I actually like 2NE1, Big Bang and SHINee at the same time so I can’t really choose a side. I heard that if you’re a fan of more than one group even though you’re already in a group, that means like cheating on a husband (I’m just saying).

I’m a fair person so I like sharing and stuff (this is because I have lots of siblings) and why can’t we just pick more than one side? I mean, you can still stay faithful to the other one… wait, does this mean we can stay faithful with our boyfriend while staying faithful with out husband? Gah! Now I get what they mean!

Well, I still love all of them and I can’t take sides because they’re awesome the way they are and in different ways too. So… which group do you like?

Errors/mistakes that we forgive

I was just searching for some MVs and live performances on Youtube and I came across some mistakes on some MVs and live performances while browsing. Here are some of them:

I actually laughed my head off when watching these. But really, they’re still human so they make mistakes. Even I make mistakes… but people don’t forgive me most of the time. If I were them, I won’t be able to continue and would immediately break down, laughing. Have mercy, people; they’re still a mortal human.

What do you think of these and what/who is your favourite group band/group band member/singer? Leave your answers on the comment box!

SM – You’ll see my wrath!

Lately, I’ve hearing about Super Junior’s – nicknames SuJu – break-up. Why? Because they’re too old, they say. Are they too old? No!

I know they’re nearly 30 and stuff (except for Kyuhyun; he’s still young) but look at the others!

*Brown Eyed Girls – JeA, Narsha and Miryo are 30 while Gain is still 24
*After School – Kahi is 31 and JungAh is 28
*Shinhwa – All the members are 30+
…And they didn’t even have a major issue to this day (except for Shinhwa…well, the leader stated that they’re not going to break up yet)

See? It’s not only SuJu! Why is everyone thinking that they’re too old to be a K-Pop idol? Is it because they really want them to break up? Do they hate them that much? Well if they don’t, then don’t post stupid rumours!

Fine! If they did break up, they’ll be a legend, just like Sech Kies, g.o.d., Baby V.O.X., S.E.S. and H.O.T., and soon you’ll want them back and start saying “Oh! I wish they didn’t break up!” Yeah, that’s right! You’re going to regret it!

Don’t worry, I’m sure they won’t break up soon. They’re too awesome to do that, anyway. Long live SuJu!
